Business like Football used to be considered a man’s world and despite some of the obstacles, women are forging ahead in both on and off the pitch. Keen to support new businesses in the area, the Ladies cut the ribbon to officially open the first branch of Jones Recruitment.
For Barbara Jones, owner of the new agency the ladies team have been an inspiration. “I know myself how it can still be hard for women to successfully start and operate their own businesses, sometimes you feel you have to work twice as hard to stay on the playing field. These ladies have succeeded in showing that even in a sport that’s traditionally been closed to women changes can be made and new opportunities opened up.”
Just six months ago Barbara was working for Australia’s top recruitment agency, spending two years in Brisbane and soon ranking as one of the company’s top 10 performers.
Barbara explains, “I joined Adecco in Plymouth specialising in the commercial and industrial sectors for both permanent and temporary positions. Adecco gave me the opportunity to join their Brisbane branch and I jumped at the chance. After settling in I soon got to know the area and began to build up the business developing our hospitality, leisure and retail client and candidate base. It was pretty scary starting a new career half way across the world but it was the best thing I ever did. It gave me the confidence to do what I had always wanted to do, set up my own agency.”
Returning to the UK just six months ago Barbara put her plan into action. Starting with a small temporary office three months ago she soon built up enough business to move bigger, brighter and better premises close to Mutley Plain. Based at Hyde Park Jones Recruitment offer a total range of services to employers and job seekers. Tailored to each client the agency fills vacancies quickly with the right candidate and offers CV and training support to job seekers.
“My experience has shown me that the right staff help a company grow, creating new opportunities for the future. I have seen phenomenal growth in the city since my return; Plymouth now seems on a par with the bustle of Brisbane. New high quality housing, retail and leisure developments and new commercial growth especially for knowledge and scientific based industries will lead to a greater demand for the right staff, for both new and existing businesses.
